Fencing can trace its roots to the beginnings of swordsmanship and self-defence.
Modern fencing has 3 disciplines of Épée, Foil and Sabre. Points are won through contact with an opponent which are scored through electronic scoring systems in line with the individual rules of each weapon.
Due to there being variations in the rules for each weapon, most fencers specialise in one weapon although team matches are held across all three weapons.
Each weapon has a different target area; sabre targets the entire body above the waist; foil targets the torso only and épée targets the entire body.
